Dance Company is the advanced level performing arts group at Yorba Linda High School. We specialize in the artistic value and athletic performance of dance. The team is currently comprised of 12 dancers under the advisement of Meshell Maes specializing in the various dance styles of jazz, ballet, modern, contemporary, hip-hop and musical theater. Here at YLHS, Ms. Maes is working to provide a different kind of experience than your usual dance team. Instead of competing we focus on creating an environment similar to college and a professional level of dancing. The girls are learning how to problem solve using movement to convey stories to an audience. They are given the opportunity to perform in front of various types of audiences in order to really grasp the college experience. We focus less on performing tricks and instead perform dance pieces that have personal meanings to the dancers. Our program values dance technique, along with artistry and exposure, and being able to use dance in a multitude of ways.
Because we are a program that focuses on dance as a production, Ms. Maes is teaching the girls life skills. Through creating bodies of work they have to learn how to problem solve and convey clear messages through their movement. These girls are involved in many other programs on campus which teach them how to manage time, be leaders to their peers, develop organization skills, and represent themselves in a positive light to their student body. Students learn to choreograph their work while adapting a creative and artistic perception to movement. Dancers utilize props, themes, concepts, lighting, costumes, and music, all to create pieces of work.
The dancers also perform at school functions where they perform spirit and crowd-pleasing routines. Dancers are currently taking both outside and inside technique classes to strengthen their abilities to further their performance level. They have participated in college dance field trips where they have taken master classes at university level. 
They are always working towards their dance shows where they will both choreograph and dance in student and faculty work. Our goal is to perform throughout the community to both strengthen our performing abilities as well as spread awareness of our thriving dance program here at Yorba Linda High School.
